“Now the spy faces prison terms”, — write: sport.ua
Back in June 2023, a Russian hockey player named Maksim Sergeev, who played for Zaglembe in the Polish Youth Hockey League, was detained by the Polish police on suspicion of espionage. Now the 21-year-old young man has admitted his guilt and will face almost three years in prison.
The Sports Network’s Rick Westhead writes that Sergeev, 19, was a poor youth working for a home delivery company when he was recruited by an FBI agent on the Telegram messaging app.
Sergeev was in a group chat with several Russian hockey players in Europe and North America, known as “Putin’s lovers,” and the FSB agent initially asked Sergeev to simply post political messages on social media in exchange for cryptocurrency. Then there were more serious business trips, including renting an apartment in Poland overlooking a factory for the production of military equipment.
According to L’Équipe, at the time of his detention Sergeev had documents created by the Wagner Group, a Russian terrorist paramilitary group, on his laptop.
We remind you that before the start of the full-scale war, almost a dozen Russian players played in almost every Ukrainian hockey club.
