Mia Hamantgoalkeeper for the University of Washington women’s soccer team, died of kidney cancer at the age of 21.

In 2024, she became one of the top goaltenders in the Big Ten Conference, posting the third-best goal percentage in program history at 0.66 per game. Mia missed her senior season due to illness.

“She was the heart of our team, a source of joy, courage and kindness,” said coach Nicole Van Dyke.

Diagnosed with stage four cancer in the spring of 2025, Hamant began treatment and received extensive support from the university and athletes, including Huskies player Denzel Boston.

Two weeks before her death, Mia appeared at a match to set off the stadium siren.

The Big Ten Conference posthumously honored her with the 2025 Sportsmanship Award.

“Mia epitomized resilience, nobility and dedication to the team, and her strength and spirit will forever be an example to the UW family,” said Athletic Director Pat Chun.

We are heartbroken by the passing of Mia Hamant after her courageous battle with cancer. Mia inspired everyone around her with her strength and spirit. Our love is with her family, teammates, and all who knew her. Her legacy will forever live in Husky Athletics. 💜🐾 pic.twitter.com/cIwVQL27o3
