According to information from a source in the Ukrainian president’s team, the meeting was very meaningful, there are issues that require additional processing, but it was called one of the most important of all time. The President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, confirmed that the telephone conversation between Zelenskyi and Trump with the European leaders lasted more than an hour. According to him, the parties discussed concrete steps to end the war and strive for a just and lasting peace.
After that, Zelensky and Trump started a joint press conference based on the results of the negotiations. The US president said that the meeting was “excellent”, the parties discussed all the details of the agreement and were very close to a settlement. According to him, the progress is about 95%, although he did not give the exact percentage.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the 20-point peace plan was agreed upon by 90%, and security guarantees – by 100%. Also, according to him, during the negotiations, the question of a possible referendum was discussed as a tool for the implementation of the plan. The President of Ukraine emphasized that the issue of territories should be resolved with respect for Ukrainian law and the will of the people.
Donald Trump said that negotiations with Zelenskyi will continue the next day. He noted that together with the European leaders, it was possible to achieve significant progress, although not all issues have been finally resolved. According to him, one or two key issues remain at the negotiations, including the territorial one. Trump also said that 91% of Ukrainians want an end to the war, Russia also, according to him, wants to end it, but at the same time, the Russian Federation is still trying to seize new territories in the coming months, so the peace agreement must be rushed.
The US president praised the bravery of the Ukrainians, who, according to him, continue to inflict significant losses on Russia, and emphasized that the time has come to end the war. He also stated that the parties are working on restoring the operation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP and are striving to start its operation again.
During the press conference, Trump did not rule out a possible visit to Ukraine to address the parliament if it would help save lives. He expressed hope that a decision on all documents will be found already in January. Zelensky also said that in a few weeks it will become clear whether the peace plan will work.
In addition, Trump said that, according to him, Putin told him that he wants to end the war, but at the same time does not agree to a ceasefire. The US president also noted that Europe will take over most of the security guarantees, and the United States will help. Separately, Trump said that Russia wants to see Ukraine successful, is ready to help in reconstruction and plans to supply cheap electricity.
In the end, Trump emphasized: if the peace plan does not work, “we will have to fight and die.”
