Rules and innovations at Next Gen ATP Finals 2025:

To win a tennis match, a tennis player must win three sets. A set is played up to four games. If the score is 3:3 in the games, a tie-break is assigned to seven points with an advantage of two points. In each game at 40:40, a decisive point is played, and the serving square is determined by the player who is serving.

Changing sides:

  • There is no change of sides after the first game.
  • After the first three games, players switch sides and sit down for 90 seconds. The next change will take place if the score becomes 3-2, and then again at the end of the set (regardless of the final score).
  • In a tiebreaker, players change sides after every six points.
  • At the end of the set, players rest for 90 seconds instead of 120.

Regulations:

  • Warm-up: Players warm up on the court for 3 minutes.
  • Ball change: After every 7 games.
  • Pitch timer: Up to 8 seconds are allowed between the first pitch and the second pitch. The pitch timer will show the time elapsed between the first pitch and the second pitch.
  • The time between draws will depend on their duration. If the draw consisted of less than three shots, the next one must start after 15 seconds, in all other cases after 25.
  • Free movement of fans: During the first three games of the match, fans are allowed to move freely around the stadium. After the first three games, fans can move freely, except in the restricted areas behind the backline, which are in direct line of sight of the players. Movement of the spectator(s) in the designated free movement areas will not be considered a legal pause in the serving timer.
  • Referee’s Chair: A lower referee’s chair will be used to reduce visual obstruction for fans in the arena.

Innovations

  • Data analysis in the arena: More match statistics and analytics will be available to fans, players and coaches than ever before. The arena will display the following data:
  • Traditional tennis stats including aces, serve percentage, break point performance
  • The results of the players depend on the duration of the draw
  • The quality of players’ shots with a breakdown by serve, reception, forehand, backhand and movement
  • Match analysis data showing which player was on offense the most, who won more points on offense (Conversion Score) and who won more points on defense (Steal Score).

Starting next year, the Next Gen ATP Finals will no longer be held in Jeddah. The tournament was originally supposed to be held in Saudi Arabia until 2027, but the Saudi Arabian Tennis Federation backed out of its five-year contract with the ATP. It is not yet known where the competitions will be held next season.
