French tennis player Gael Monfils (ATP 52) made it to the semifinals of the ATP 250 hard tournament in Auckland, New Zealand.

In the 3rd round, Elina Svitolina’s husband lost in two sets Facundo Diaz Acosta (Argentina, ATP 78) in 1 hour and 18 minutes.

This was the first meeting of the rivals. Facundo lost in the final qualifier, but earned lucky loser status and managed to get past Cameron Norrie and Sebastian Baez.

Monfils reached the semi-finals for the first time since June 2024. Then he lost in the semi-finals at the grass competition in Mallorca.

Gael’s next opponent will be Nishesh Basavareddy (USA, ATP 133), who defeated Alex Mickelsen (USA, ATP 41) 2:6, 6:2, 6:4 in the quarterfinals. Previously, Monfils and Basavareddy had a face-to-face confrontation in the 1st round of Brisbane, where the Frenchman won in three games.

Monfils will headline the 2025 Australian Open next week.
