Let’s bow our heads. The coach of Kyiv-Basket and Budivelnik was killed near Robotyn

Every day at 9 in the morning, Ukrainians honor the memory of people whose lives were taken by the Russian-Ukrainian war. Today, Sport.ua remembers former basketball player and physical training coach of Kyiv-Basket and Budivelnyk capital teams, as well as youth national teams of Ukraine, Dmytro Marchovskyi, who died fighting for Ukraine two years ago, in January 2024. Dmytro was considered missing for a long time, but eventually the information about his death was confirmed. The soldier was 30 years old.

Dmytro Markhovskyi was born and raised in Kyiv, and has been doing his favorite thing since he was a teenager – playing basketball and professionally coaching basketball players. Dmytro was a physical training coach of the leading capital teams – “Budievelnyk” and “Kyiv-Basket”.

In the summer of 2023, Markhovskyi was in the staff of the youth national team of Ukraine U20 Dmytro was a combat medic at the front, saving the lives of his comrades. His last words, according to eyewitnesses of the battle near Robotyn of the Pologiv district in Zaporizhzhia, were the phrase: “I’m fine, I can continue to help.”

For a long time, the soldier was considered missing, so there was at least some hope that Dmitry survived or was captured. However, at the end of August 2024, the sad news of his death was confirmed.

His father, Oleg Marhovskyi, informed of Dmytro’s death, wrote insightful words: “Son, you lived your life with dignity. Now you and my heavenly protector. I miss you, miss you, and am proud of you at the same time. Bright memory to you – Son, Warrior, Trainer!”
