Jose Mourinho blasted Benfica’s players after their exit from the League Cup

Benfica coach Jose Mourinho spoke about the failure in the semi-final match of the Portuguese League Cup against Braga (1:3).

“Views on the game may differ, but I think everyone will rate this match unanimously. Your opinion will coincide with ours.

We spent the first half of the meeting unsuccessfully, although the beginning was promising: we possessed the ball and had chances to stand out. Then there was the incident with a penalty that ended up being overturned by VAR – it could have given us a boost, but instead it started a real slump.

From the technical point of view, it was an obvious failure: the players made mistakes in elementary situations. There was a stretch where, right in front of my bench, three different players took turns making cross passes into the low block near their own goal.

Emotionally, we also failed the first half – except for the first five minutes, I don’t see anything positive. After the break, the team changed: turned on the pressing, began to actively win the ball and go forward.

It can be stated that the first half remained for “Braga”, and the second – for us. A fair result could have been a draw, but it turned out differently. As a result, it was not “Braga” who won – it was us who were defeated,” Mourinho was quoted as saying by the Record publication.

In the decisive match for the trophy, “Braga” will fight with “Vitoria Guimarães”, which on Tuesday was stronger than “Sporting” (2:1).
