Former Newcastle defender Mike Williamson has taken a first-team coaching role at South ShieldsCredit: GETTY And the former Newcastle United and Portsmouth star defender has volunteered his services to The Mariners for FREE.
Williamson’s arrival at the 1st Cloud Arena was announced on the club’s social media pages on Friday.
A statement read: “Mike Williamson has stepped into a voluntary role at the club as a Men’s First-Team Coach, and will assist with the management team moving forward.
“Welcome to the club, Mike!”
Williamson’s arrival was greeted warmly by Mariners fans.
One wrote on X: “Some statement, cracking appointment.”
Another said: “Unbelievable!! Welcome Mike!! UTM.”
And another said: “Superb young coach and manager will give great input and support.”

Mike Williamson was part of Russell Brand’s coaching staff at RangersCredit: WILLIE VASS One remarked: “Statement.”

Williamson’s South Shields gig will see him reunite with Ian Watson, who was one of his first-team coaches when he was in charge of Carlisle United.
Williamson was sacked by the Cumbrians in February 2025 after winning just FIVE of his 25 games in charge.
His first-team role with South Shields will be his second job since leaving Brunton Park.
He was part of Russell Martin’s ill-fated Rangers staff, which was given its marching orders by the Ibrox brass last October.
