But the 35-year-old held his nerve against Wade to set up a last-eight clash against Mickey Mansell.
In what was one of the biggest victories of his career, Menzies collapsed to the floor after hitting the double top to win it.
He had tears in his eyes as he celebrated, with the result earning him a cheque of at least £25,000.
Not bad for a player who still works part-time as a plumber and went to fix pipes on his day off from this week’s tournament.
After his win over Wade, Menzies said: “I’ve not played well [at this tournament] yet. I had a bit of luck.
“I went into the qualifiers with no hope, but now I am in the last eight.
“I might have to phone in sick tomorrow.”

After losing his previous match 5-1 to Beau Greaves, Menzies admitted to racing home “in a huff” as he had to be up early for work.
The result was set to see him crash out in the Grand Slam of Darts group stages.
But Danny Noppert beat Martin Schindler 5-2 and it meant he narrowly qualified for the knockout rounds.
Menzies admitted he owes the Dutchman a “beer or two”.
And he now has tickets to a concert to get rid of as he can no longer make the gig due to his shock run at the Slam.
