Despite losing 18-0 to Max Verstappen in qualifying, Red Bull management praised Tsunoda for his performance in Mexico City, finishing just 0.211 seconds behind his star team-mate in Q2. In the race, the delay at the pit stop deprived Tsunoda of the chances for points. This was recognized by the team leader Laurent Mekis.
However, Villeneuve does not agree with the assessments at Red Bull.
“I don’t understand how you can call it a good weekend. Yes, he may have been better than some of the others, but he’s still too far behind his partner. He gives Red Bull no pace, no points, no help for Max in the championship,” Villeneuve told Sky Sports.
“He already has enough experience. We’ve seen the most from Yuki, and it’s only going to be downhill. Red Bull overprotects him. It was not a good weekend. Perhaps the least bad – but by no means good.”
The Canadian also believes that Tsunoda’s experience is not an argument in the fight for a place at Red Bull for 2026.
“They say: experience is needed. But quality experience is needed. If a rider does not perform at a high level for many years, he will continue to be of no use. Will not help with new rules, will not develop the car. In this case, it is better to take a young pilot who will bring new energy,” added Villeneuve.
Currently, the main contender for the transfer to Red Bull in 2026 is Isak Hajjar. The debutant of the season has already won the podium and is in 10th place in the standings. Tsunoda is only 17th: 39 points against 28.
