But Cross silenced The Iceman’s home support after a thrilling finish.
Ahead of the contest, Sky Sports had broadcast a feature with Price showing presenter Polly James around his chip shop in Markham, South Wales.
So when Cross conjured a 170 checkout, known as a Big Fish, to stun Price 6-5 in their quarter-final, fans couldn’t help but notice the irony.
One wrote on social media: “Sky running a pre-match feature with Gerwyn Price at his chippy only for Rob Cross to take out the big fish to win the match is Premier League Darts heritage.”
While a second gushed: “That’s pure darts poetry. Sky really set it up like a movie, and Voltage delivered the perfect plot twist.”
A third pointed out: “Could not have been scripted any better.”
Another added: “Absolute Cinema.”
