MATCHWEEK ONE of the Champions League has concluded after a thrilling round of fixtures on Thursday night.

Marcus Rashford stole the show at St James’ Park as his stunning double helped Barcelona to a 2-1 win over Newcastle.

Elsewhere, Manchester City secured a 2-0 win over the 10 men of Napoli as Kevin De Bruyne returned to the Etihad for the first time since his summer departure.

It wasn’t the fairytale return he had hoped for as the Belgian was subbed off after 26 minutes following Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s early red card, which forced Antonio Conte into a reshuffle.

  • Not exactly the fairytale we wantedKevin De Bruyne’s Etihad homecoming didn’t last long, the former City talisman was the unlucky sacrifice when Napoli went down to 10 men, subbed off after just 26 minutes.

But City fans made sure their legend felt the love: every time the announcer mentioned his name, it was met with huge cheers, and the stands rang out with his song throughout and after the match.

  • English teams final scoresWith the first Champions League matchweek wrapped up, all the English sides have now played.

It’s been a real mixed bag for Premier League fans — some buzzing after big home and away wins, others left wishing for much better. The Champions League is as unforgiving as ever.

    • Athletic Club 0-2 Arsenal
    • Tottenham 1-0 Villarreal
    • Bayern Munich 3-1 Chelsea
    • Liverpool 3-2 Atletico Madrid
    • Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona
    • Man City 2-0 Napoli
  • Man of the Match MarcusRashford fully deserved the Man of the Match award after the show he put on at St. James’ Park.

Not only did he fire Barcelona’s Champions League campaign into life, but stepping in for the absent Lamine Jamal, he marked the night with his first two goals for the Catalan club.

  • ‘It’s a great start’Phil Foden fully deserved his Man of the Match award tonight.

He was a constant threat, carved out several chances, and, of course, teed up Haaland for the opener.

Speaking to the touchline reporter after the final whistle, Foden was pleased to see City start their Champions League campaign with a win.

He said: “They’re a nightmare team to break down, they give you minimal spaces, and it’s about using the ball at the right time and break the lines.

“I thought we were pretty clever tonight, we didn’t give many turnovers, overall a solid performance.”

  • Record breaking HaalandErling Haaland just keeps on coming; he never stops, and yet again, he’s broken another record.

He’s now become the fastest player ever to hit 50 goals in the Champions League.

And it took him just 49 matches, incredible.

  • ‘I think it’s making me a better player’Speaking to the TNT Sports panellists, Marcus Rashford reflects on his time so far in Barcelona and that excellent performance we witnessed just a few hours ago.

He said: “I’ve always been a huge admirer of Barcelona, I’ve watched them from a young age.

“It’s very difficult to come here [Newcastle] and play, and i felt like we did that today.”

On his thunderstrike, he said, “I just felt there was a gap. I could see the far post out of the corner of my eye, so I just thought to get a shot off.

“When you’re going away from the goal, it’s difficult to generate the power when going low, so I just thought to aim high.”

  • Not what we wished forWith Kevin De Bruyne, the one sacrificed for a defensive change after Napoli went down to 10 men, his night ended early after just 25 minutes.

But as he walked off, the City fans made sure their club legend knew he’s still adored in Manchester.

  • Full time scoresThere were SIXTEEN goals in tonight’s 8pm kickoffs.

Another great Champions League matchday in the books.

    • Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona
    • Man City 2-0 Napoli
    • Frankfurt 5-1 Galatasaray
    • Sporting CP 4-1 Kairat Almaty
  • Rashford at the doubleAfter a tight first half, Barcelona came out for the second 45 and absolutely blew Newcastle away.

They rode out the early storm and made it count.

And they can thank their new man on the left wing, Marcus Rashford, who bagged two brilliant goals.

The first was a perfectly placed header to open the scoring.

The second was an absolute stunner, we all know about the winger’s shot power, and it was on full display again as the ball crashed off the underside of the bar and in.

    Pope had no chance.

What a return to England for the 27-year-old.

The star’s first Champions League goals for almost four years were enough to seal the points for the five-time winners.

That brace capped a man of the match performance for the forward – all in front of watching England boss Thomas Tuchel.

Anthony Gordon’s goal right at the death gave the Magpies brief hope, but the stunning comeback failed to materialise.

Rashford is back in business while Eddie Howe is left trying to pick up his players for Sunday’s long trip to his old club Bournemouth. At least they went down swinging.

  • Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona90+7. One last ball into the box is hurled in and after a clearance from Barcelona, Tonali catches the ball on the volley, but his attempt is an easy save for the keeper.

The Referee blows the full-time whistle after a crazy final few minutes.

An excellne tgame that had twists and turns, and Marcus Rashford showing that he’s not finished yet.

  • Full-time – Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona
  • Full-time: Frankfurt 5-1 Galatasaray
  • Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona93+4. Newcastle are desperate to get the ball up the pitch.

They’re trying to throw the kitchen sink here at Barcelona.

    NEWCASTLE 1 BARCELONA 2

Anthony Gordon pulls one back, sliding in Jacob Murphy’s cross, with the last kick of normal time.

It still seemed that would be too little, too late but the fourth official has just announced SEVEN MINUTES of additional time.

    They couldn’t, could they?

  • Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona90. Game on??

Newcastle, out of nowhere, pull one back, and with seven minutes of added time, this could be a great ending to this match.

  • Goal Newcastle! – Anthony Gordon
  • Newcastle 0-2 Barcelona88. Not long to go now in this match.

Newcastle is trying anything here to create another chance.

Great play from Dan Burn, but Liveramento can’t pass on the overlap.

  • Newcastle 0-2 Barcelona80. 10 minutes to go here at St. James’ Park.

Barcelona is looking very comfortable here, Pedri and De Jong just popping the ball about as they wish.

This is the most confident i’ve seen Rashford in a very long time, and now unfortunately his match is over.

He’s been replaced by Dani Olmo, and Eric Garcia also comes on for Gerard Martin.

Rashford can hold his head very high, an unbelievable performance from the winger.

  • Goal – Edmilson Filho (Kariat Almaty)Live – Sporting 4-1 Kairat Almaty

  • View of Martin Blackburn from the Etihad.Antonio Conte said his Napoli team were the ‘students’ against a team of City’s pedigree.

And just when it looked like his 10-man team would produce a defensive masterclass, up stepped head boy Erling Haaland.

He nodded home his 50th goal in the competition – the quickest man ever to the landmark – and from there City never looked back.

Jeremy Doku – fresh from his baptism on Sunday night – added a second on what turned into a comfortable night.

  • Goal – Ansgar Knauff (Frankfurt)Live – Frankfurt 5-1 Galatasaray

  • Newcastle 0-2 Barcelona74. Much better from Newcastle, they’ve struggled here in this second half, but that Guimaraes strike has just lifted this crowd.

They’ve made a quadruple sub here, with their star man Woltemade also coming on hoping to make a difference.
