CHAMPIONS LEAGUE football returns for another thrilling night of action – and two English giants will have their hands full.

Club World Cup champions Chelsea make the tough trip to Bayern Munich, who now possess Blues loanee Nicolas Jackson.

While Liverpool welcome stern Spanish side Atletico Madrid to Anfield.

Yesterday, Arsenal scored two second-half goals through Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard to get off to a winning start against Athletic – although Viktor Gyokeres suffered a gruesome injury.

And Tottenham were also victorious, with an own goal handing them the win in their first game back in the Champion League.

  • Arteta’s super subsArsenal got their Champions League season off to a good start on Tuesday with a big win over Athletic Bilbao at San Mames.

And a lot of it goes down to manager Mikel Arteta’s super subs Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.

Trossard set up Martinelli on 72 minutes, just 36 seconds after the latter entered the pitch.

And then the Brazil international provided the assists for the Belgium international just three minutes before full-time.

  • Big matches tonightEurope’s most competitive tournament continues with more huge fixtures in its opening week.

After Tottenham and Arsenal set the tone yesterday with wins in their Champions League openers, the pressure now shifts to Liverpool and Chelsea to follow suit.

Liverpool hosts Atletico Madrid under the lights at Anfield, in what promises to be a tense encounter.

Chelsea head back to the Allianz Arena in Munich—the very ground where they stunned Bayern to claim their first Champions League crown

  • Familiar facesWith Chelsea travelling to Germany to face Bayern Munich tonight, the travelling away fans may have to face the Blues’ second-highest goal scorer last season.

Making the deadline day move just last month, Nicolas Jackson’s loan deal to Bayern Munich became the most expensive loan deal in Bundesliga history.

If he makes an appearance tonight, he’ll be hoping to not only impress his current club but also his parent club.

  • New formats and new featuresWith more European action than ever, Amazon Prime have released a new way for fans to watch the action as it unfolds.

  • Instant impactMartinelli wasted no time making his mark, opening the scoring for Arsenal less than a minute after stepping onto the pitch.

In a game crying out for a spark, Arteta’s decision to introduce both Martinelli and Trossard proved spot on.

    The impact was immediate.

  • Bitter blow…After not being picked in the England Squad, Trent Alexander Arnold’s luck has gone from bad to worse.

Starting in his first Champions League match for Real Madrid, the right back had gone down injured, hobbling off with a hamstring injury in the first FIVE minutes of the match against Marseille.

  • Game of the dayWhile we were here at SunSport covering the two games from the English sides, there was an incredible EIGHT-goal thriller between Juventus and Borussia Dortmund.

Held at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, an incredible match unfolded. With sides level at 2-2 in the 70th minute, the German side thought they had got the victory, after going 4-2 up after Remi Bensebaini tucked away a penalty in the 86th minute for his team.

However, the Italian side was not done yet – Vlahovic managed to score what was thought of as just a consolation goal in stoppage time.

Yet that just spurred them on.

It wasn’t until the 96th minute of additional time that former Bournemouth and Newcastle defender Lloyd Kelly made his way into the box unmarked and scored with a diving header.

His goal salvaged a point for Juventus in the dying seconds, just when it seemed the game had slipped away.

Already an absolute classic Champions League match under the floodlights this season, and we’ve only just begun.

  • Champions League on a Thursday? With UEFA constantly tweaking formats and expanding its competitions, find out why Europe’s football calendar looks different this season compared to years past.

  • Arsenal’s SUPER subsWhat an incredible impact from Arsenal’s substitutes earlier today—they completely turned the tide with just 25 minutes left on the clock.

The breakthrough came from Trossard’s inch-perfect pass to Martinelli, who coolly slotted home to open the scoring.

Then came the second: Martinelli dazzled with a mazy run past multiple Bilbao defenders before picking out Trossard in the box, who made no mistake with the finish.

A game that was drifting suddenly burst into life, thanks to the spark off the bench.

  • ‘It was a tough game’Speaking to the sideline repoter after the match, Mickey Van de Ven gave his thoughts on that gritty match.

He said: “We had a really good start and we wanted tp build on that.

“Villarreal is also a really good team to play against, they were a threat on the counterattack.”

On that clash with Mikutadze right at the end of the match, he said: “You never know what the referee is going pt do at that moment.

“I haven’t seen it back yet, but I fully went for the ball, so yes, I was concerned, but I think a yellow card was fair.”

  • Bellowing boosAnother notable moment was Thomas Partey’s return to English soil.

The boos rang out from the stands throughout the night, while he sat on the bench, during his warm-up, and especially when he stepped onto the pitch in the 78th minute.

The Spurs faithful made their feelings very clear.

  • Goalkeeper blunderWith few clear-cut chances throughout, the match will be remembered for one glaring moment, Luiz Junior’s costly howler.

Spurs came out of the blocks with intent but failed to build on their early momentum, fading as the game wore on.

It was a scrappy affair, but a clean sheet and three points will feel like a decent return on a difficult night.

  • A win’s a winNot the best display from Thomas Frank’s side tonight, with the only goal arriving in the opening four minutes of the first half.

Spurs, meanwhile, will be breathing a sigh of relief after a gritty and unconvincing performance.

A forgettable game, but in the end, they’ll gladly pocket the three points.

  • From Martin Lipton at TottenhamThree points. Somehow.

Deeply unconvincing from start to finish and Villarreal must be wondering how they’ve ended up with nothing from that one.

But Thomas Frank has shown he can find a way to win a game on Europe’s biggest stage.

That’s four out of five in competitive games for the new Spurs boss.

No question that Spurs rode their luck for quite a lot of that one, after being handed that gift of an own goal opener by keeper Luiz Junior.

Both Xavi Simons and Micky van der Ven were perilously close to red cards, while former Arsenal flop Pepe was the best player on the pitch.

As for the reaction to Thomas Partey’s second half appearance, well, you can guess.

Tottenham will have to play an awful lot better to go deep in the Champions League.. But it’s a win to kick off their return to the Euro elite.

  • Full time – Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Villarreal90+4. One last chance for Villareal with Dani Parejo launches the ball into the box.

The flick on however leads to nothing and the referee blows the full time whistle.

Tottenham limp their way to a win in their first Champions League match this campaign.

As far as spurs are concerned, a win is a win.

  • Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Villarreal90+1. Not long left to go now in this one.

The foruth official adding just three minutes to the 90 has really let Spurs off here.

With Villarreal feeling like they deserve somethimg from this match, they’re putting the pressure on in these last few minutes.

Spurs are just happy to here the final whistle now.

  • From Martin Lipton at TottenhamLast few minutes and all the jeers, boos and insults hurled at Partey – many of which cannot be reported for a variety of reasons – cannot hide how lucky Spurs are to still be ahead.

Van der Ven’s foul on Mikautadze was a fraction outside the box and might have been deemed denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

Pepe was so close again from  the resulting free-kick.

Not many fingernails left in N17.

  • Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Villarreal85. Pepe steps up to take the free kick, and his powerful strike just goes past the post.

Spurs getting away with another one there.

With not long to go, Spurs need to make sure they get over the line and claim all three points.

  • Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Villarreal82. A free-kick awarded to Villarreal after what looked close to a penalty, the referee rules it a free-kick.

The ball is played through to Mikautadze, who goes down after a nudge from Van de Ven, who subsequently goes into the book.

  • Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Villarreal78. We were all expecting this…

Villarreal makes some changes to try and turn the game around, and Thomas Partey comes on that’s met with loud boos from the Spurs crowd.

The Tottenham faithful are making their opinions of the midfielder very clear.

  • Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Villarreal75. Some more firepower as Spurs make a few more changes.

Kolo Muani comes on for Richarlison, while Brennan Johnson replaces Xavi Simmons.

  • Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Villarreal71. Close from Richarlison!

A great teasing ball in from Kudus who whips it in, and Richarlison’s diving header just goes past the post.

By far their best chance in this second half.

  • From Martin Lipton at TottenhamQuite how Simons escaped a second yellow for a blatant foul on Pepe is hard to work out. The Dutchman and his manager will be mightily relieved.

Frank needed to change things to try and get some control back.

Palhinha on for Sarr was required while Udogie replacing the wayward Spence makes sense as well.

The nervousness of the fans tells its own story. Spurs are hanging on to this lead. And only just.
