Norwegian athlete Magnus Carlsen and a player without a flag Jan Nepomniachy shared the title of world champion in the blitz game of chess.

In the final round of the World Championship, which ended in New York, the audience witnessed the unexpected end of the tournament.

According to the results of 13 rounds according to the Swiss system, the top 8 chess players made it to the 1/4 finals. Ukrainians Oleksandr Bortnyk and Mykola Bortnyk scored 9 points each and took 11th and 12th place, respectively. Vasyl Ivanchuk, a 55-year-old chess veteran, finished 66th (7 points) and burst into tears because of his poor performance.

In the main part of the final series, the grandmasters played 4 games, which ended in a draw. Then the game was to continue until the first victory. After that, three tie-break games were played, but none of them decided a winner.

Magnus Carlsen proposed an unusual solution: to share the title of world champion. This initiative, violating the regulations, was supported by Jan Nepomniachy and the organizers of the tournament. For the first time in the history of chess, the title of world champion in the blitz game was shared by two sportsmen.

This decision caused a lot of controversy in the chess community. American chess player Hans Niemann expressed his opinion: “It’s official: the chess world has gone mad! This has never happened in history. I can’t believe that world chess is controlled by one player. There can only be one world champion!”
