And this is really the best start of the season in Kalinina’s career. She will definitely be back in the top 50 of the WTA rankings from Monday, but why not aim for more?

We will not analyze the matches of the Ukrainian woman until the 1/4 finals, we have already done it many times. Let’s briefly go through the game with Kimberly. Tense three sets and the level of tennis deserved the final. The result of the game was decided not by a couple of specific games or points, but by a couple of shots.

Kalinina saved the match point in the 10th game after a dangerous and rather sharp rally, although not the longest. But the tennis players made 3-4 shots, after which Angelina hit a forehand volley to Birrell’s left part of the court. In the end, the game remained with the Ukrainian, and in the 11th Kalinin, after another long draw, clearly hit the back line on the break point, breaking through again.

Kalinin acted on experience, tried to sharpen, but it cannot be said that she led the game. Kimberly, charged with the support of the stands, got all the balls and made Angelina lose her temper. For the first time in 4 matches, Kalinin understood that she could lose and reacted accordingly. Fortunately, luck + confidence + calmness on important points + clarity brought such a difficult victory.

But still, there are two positive factors for Angelina: the lack of support of the opponent from the stands (if compared to the game against Birrell), as well as Polina’s fatigue. The fact that Kudermetova is having the best tournament of her career is, of course, good (for her). But she has never played so many (6 to be exact) difficult matches in hot Australia in 7 days. Will Kudermetova cope physically in the absence of proper experience? I doubt it.
