A resident of New York, Timothy McCormack, became the first person convicted in the high-profile case of insider betting in the NBA. A federal court in Brooklyn sentenced him to two years in prison for using confidential information to bet on the performances of league players.

Prosecutors insisted on a four-year term, calling McCormack’s actions intentional fraud. The defense, on the other hand, referred to his years of gambling addiction. The court also banned McCormack from gambling for a year after his release. He must appear in prison by April 20.

McCormack placed bets on games featuring former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter, who is banned for life, and games featuring Terry Rozier of the Miami Heat.

The investigation began after bookmakers reported suspicious activity to the International Betting Fair Association and then to the FBI.

McCormack’s sentence was the first real punishment in a case that has increased scrutiny of betting integrity and drawn attention to the risks of insider trading in professional sports.
