“The leader of the world ranking in the final beat Barry Hawkins with a score of 10:8”, — write: sport.ua
Persistent Barry Hawkins, nicknamed the Hawk, showed great determination to fight and from 6:9 proved the deficit to 8:9. He had a chance to deliver the decisive blow in the 18th frame, but missed on a shot on the red in the left middle pocket. Trump then appeared to have a match point with a break of 67.
However, the indefatigable Hawkins turned up the heat in a position where he needed two snookers. He gave Trump some tricky snookers and ended up with four penalty points. Hawkins continued to chase but failed to produce the second snooker he needed. Trump scored a long-range shot, sealed the victory, and pumped his fist in the air with relief.
This is the 30th title Judd Trump in ranking tournaments in his brilliant career, only Ronnie O’Sullivan (41), Stephen Hendry (36) and John Higgins (31) won more than him. The 2019 World Champion won trophies at Triple Crown tournaments 5 times (one WC, two UK and two Masters).
Trump won the top prize of £250,000 and crossed the £1 million mark for the season. He became the first player to cross this milestone in one tournament before Christmas. Judd also won titles this season at the Shanghai Masters and Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters.
Ace first won the UK title back in 2011 when he beat Mark Allen 10-8 in the final at the age of 22. Trump then played in the finals of the UK Championship in 2014 and 2020. However, he lost 9:10 to Ronnie O’Sullivan and Neil Robertson respectively. The new victory made the 35-year-old Trump the 10th snooker player to win more than one title at the British Championship.
Barry Hawkins still trying to achieve his first triumph in one of the Triple Crown tournaments, but was defeated again. The 45-year-old athlete previously had 3 unsuccessful attempts.
He lost to O’Sullivan in the 2013 World Championship final and in the 2016 Masters title match. Hawkins was also runner-up to Neil Robertson at Alexandra Palace in the 2022 Masters.
Hawkins’ performances this week earned him £100,000 and a return to the top 16. His reward for such a performance will be another meeting with Trump in the first round of the 2025 Masters next month.
Trump and Hawkins entered the evening session with a 5-3 advantage over Judd. Hawk continued to take frames, but Trump kept him at bay in the count for most of the evening.
Breaks of 62 and 32 gave Trump the first frame of the evening. Hawkins then took two frames to make it 5-6, and Trump scored a 67 in the 12th frame to take a 7-5 lead into the evening session’s mini-break.
When the game resumed, the opponents exchanged frames, and then a decisive break of 133 points took Trump to the finish line with a score of 9:6.
It looked like Hawkins’ run was over, but he refused to give up and scored runs of 75 and 82 to make it 8-9.
Under maximum pressure, it was Trump who won the nervous 18th game, putting an end to the match (10:8).
Judd Trump: “It was such an even match. It seemed that the score could become 9:9. I was under a lot of pressure and I knew I had to take a risk because my opponent was playing well. I slowed down and tried to be precise with each stroke. There was no talent in this break. I just had to find a way to get the balls into the pocket. In a situation where the opponent needed two snookers, I felt safe. And suddenly he was back in the game. It was a huge relief to score the brown layer.
It was an incredible game. Barry put up an incredible fight for what a late match he had yesterday. I got a good lead at 9:6 and he really came on, winning back to 8:9. In the end, I guess I just got a little lucky to finish the match.
If he was tired, he didn’t show it. Barry fought stubbornly. He came out fresh and still fighting late in the game. It was an incredible performance from him and I hope he wins one of those titles one day.
It’s a very tough tournament, hard to win, and my results here have not been impressive. It’s been a while since I’ve been to a final here in York. I fought Neal in the first round, managed to get past him and then switched on. I am very proud of this trophy and appreciate it very much.”
Barry Hawkins: “It was a great week. If someone had said in advance that I would make it to the finals, I would have agreed. When I was here in the final, I wanted to win. I think it was a great game. I guess I wasted my chance. I probably should have equalized the score 9:9. I managed to pull myself together until the end and I felt good.
I beat some great snooker players this week but lost to the best player in the world. He is number one in the rating for a reason. He is a fantastic player and his all-round game is phenomenal. It is not shameful to lose to such an opponent with a score of 8:10.”
