Zelensky explained the criticism of Scholz’s call to Putin / photo president.gov.uaPresident of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi knew in advance about the call of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to the Russian ruler Vladimir Putin. However, he maintains contacts with the Russian Federation only at the intelligence level.As Zelensky stated in an interview with the American TV channel Fox News, during the meeting, Scholz told him that he was going to call Putin. The Ukrainian president believes that such a conversation would be useful if its results were clear:
“What did the chancellor get from this call? Nothing. Nothing new… We fight not only with weapons, but also with diplomacy. Diplomacy is very important. And only diplomacy can put an end to this war,” Zelenskyy said.
The Ukrainian leader noted that American and European intelligence interacts with the Russian side even during the war in Ukraine. However, this does not go against their policy of political isolation in Kyiv.
“You should not recognize Putin as the president, because he is a murderer. Otherwise, you will destroy this political isolation,” the president said.

Later, Scholz said that the conversation with Putin showed his attitude to the war in Ukraine. He noted that the dialogue was quite detailed.
“The conversation was very detailed, but it contributed to the recognition that little has changed in the views of the Russian president on the war, and this is not good news,” said the Chancellor of Germany.
