Zelensky Clarifies Comments on MPs and Military Service

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently addressed the role of parliament members amid ongoing military efforts in the country. He emphasized that deputies must either fulfill their duties in the Verkhovna Rada or consider military service.

In a statement, the head of the parliamentary faction, David Arahamia, explained that Zelensky’s remarks were misinterpreted. He clarified that the president mentioned that every citizen, including deputies, has the responsibility to either work for the state or defend it.

Arahamia noted that many deputies have expressed a desire to join the armed forces, but current legislation does not permit this. He added that some members are affiliated with specific military units while still attending parliamentary sessions.

“Legally, they are parliament members, not military personnel,” Arahamia stated, indicating that Zelensky is open to discussing legislative changes that would allow MPs to serve in the military.

On March 15, Zelensky stated that if MPs are not serving in parliament, they should be prepared to serve on the front lines. He reiterated his stance, saying, “If you are not serving the state in parliament, then serve on the front lines.”

The president also mentioned that numerous MPs have expressed a willingness to resign their mandates during wartime. However, he stressed the importance of continuing their work despite the challenges posed by the conflict.

He pointed out that attempts have been made to undermine the ruling majority and influence votes on key legislation.

President Zelensky clarified his recent comments regarding the responsibilities of Ukrainian MPs, emphasizing their duty to either serve in parliament or the military. This follows discussions about potential legislative changes to allow MPs to join the armed forces.
