“The award was given to the capital of Poland for the demonstrated humanism, mercy and solidarity with the Ukrainian people, comprehensive assistance to Ukrainians who were forced to leave Ukraine due to Russian armed aggression, as well as for the strong support of our state in the defense of independence and sovereignty,” the post states.
The President of Ukraine presented the award to the Mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Tszaskowski.
Previously, it was awarded to other Polish cities – Rzeszów, Przemyśl, Lublin and Chelm for helping Ukrainian refugees at the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia.
The award was also given to Paris, Prague and Vilnius.
“Savior City” is an honorary award established by the president to mark the humanism, mercy, solidarity with the Ukrainian people in defending the ideals of freedom, peace and democracy, as well as the support of Ukraine in protecting its independence and sovereignty during the repulsion of armed forces aggression of the Russian Federation. Founded in May 2022.
According to Eurostat, as of November 30, 2024, Poland accepted 987,925 refugees from Ukraine.
