In response to increased Russian drone and missile attacks, the Pentagon is sending more than 500 interceptor missiles to Ukraine for the Patriot missile defense system and the NASAMS-class missile system. This was reported to The Wall Street Journal by a high-ranking representative of the Biden administration.

They are expected to arrive in Ukraine in the coming weeks.

These deliveries should meet Ukraine’s air defense needs by the end of this year, one US official said.

The Biden administration’s effort to send billions of dollars worth of military equipment to Ukraine before it leaves the White House is facing major logistical hurdles, officials told the WSJ, and there is concern that the shipments will deplete already depleted American stockpiles.

Journalists note that these obstacles highlight how much the election of Donald Trump has disrupted the US campaign to provide aid to Ukraine.

Trump has promised to end the war in Ukraine before taking office. Although the president-elect has not laid out a plan for how to do so, Biden administration officials fear the new administration will cut arms shipments to Ukraine as part of an effort to force Kyiv and Moscow to the negotiating table.

By providing Kiev with as much military aid as possible until January, Biden administration officials hope to strengthen Ukraine’s negotiating position and strengthen its defense capabilities. According to the Pentagon representative, before the elections, the administration intended to deliver the rest of the aid to Ukraine by April. After the elections, this schedule gained new relevance.

Earlier, the Pentagon announced that by January 20 – the end of Joe Biden’s presidential term, they intend to use all remaining funds for programs to support Ukraine. It is about 6 billion dollars.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, as of October 15, the United States has allocated more than $59.1 billion in security assistance to Ukraine.
