This opinion was expressed by the former Ambassador of Ukraine to the US and France Oleg Shamshur in an interview with OBOZ.UA.
According to the exponent, despite the critical statements of Trump on Putin, the US President did not change his main purpose – to end the war in Ukraine “under any conditions, in particular at the expense of Ukraine’s interests” and reformat relations with Russia.
“The worldview of Putin, in principle, remains. What really needs to pay attention to? To the fact that he obviously expected that it would be easier to agree, and all his ideas, wishes will be fulfilled by the parties in the war. This explains his critical statements about Putin, although he did not do it for a long time.”
However, whether it will grow into greater pressure on Russia, the diplomat said, as it is difficult to predict, because now all statements by Trump on the readiness to use sanctions “unambiguously hanging in the air”. Although, in fact, the exhibit says, the Russian economy is now finally protected.
“This applies to the primary prices for oil, which simply rolled down, but there are other serious factors. So now there is a very good moment when it is possible not only to put Putin at the negotiating table and forcing it to cease fire, but to cause serious and large -scale harm, if it is not possible.
In his opinion, Trump’s statements about possible sanctions against the Russian Federation “are made only to put Putin at the negotiating table”:
“But the main reason for me, is that after the armistice, I do not see the modifications of Trump’s current plan for Ukraine, which are absolutely unacceptable to us, which are very close to Putin’s beasts. There are no signs that it has changed or may change.”
Trump’s intentions can change, the diplomat believes “if the level of arrogance in Putin’s behavior increases.”
“This can really affect Trump, because it is a significant factor for Trump – respect or disrespect for his actions, for his personality. Also, if the situation on the front in our favor will change, because we know, Americans love the winners,” Samshur suggested.
