Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever commented on the situation surrounding the frozen assets of the Russian Federation / photo UNIANThe issue of confiscation of frozen Russian assets carries serious risks for Belgium. Moscow made it clear that in the event of such a move, Belgium would feel the consequences “forever”.
Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever said this in an interview with La Libre Belgique. He said the pressure on the case was “unbelievable” and his team was working day and night on it.
“It would be a great story: to take money from the villain Putin and give it to the good guy, Ukraine. But stealing the frozen assets of another country, its sovereign funds, has never been done before. We are talking about the money of the Central Bank of Russia,” he said.
The Belgian politician noted that even during the Second World War, Germany’s money was not confiscated. De Wever noted that assets are frozen for the duration of the war, and after its end, the country must give all or part of the assets to compensate the winners for their losses.
However, the Belgian prime minister says that Russia’s loss is a “complete illusion”:
“But who really believes that Russia will lose in Ukraine? This is a fairy tale, a complete illusion. It is even undesirable for it to lose and instability to prevail in a country that has nuclear weapons. And who believes that Putin will calmly agree to the confiscation of Russian assets?”.
According to him, “Moscow made us understand that in case of confiscation, Belgium and I personally will feel it forever.” Also, de Wever says that Russia can seize Western assets.
“Euroclear has 16 billion in Russia. All Belgian factories in Russia can also be confiscated. What if Belarus and China also confiscate Western assets? Have we thought about all this? No, we haven’t. I asked my European colleagues if they are ready to share the risks that Belgium is exposed to. Only Germany said that it is ready to do it… Without such a sharing, I will do everything to block this issue. Everything”, – stated the prime minister of Belgium.
