According to Tasting Table, no records have previously been found that the presidents had made wine or brewed beer in the White House – until 2011.
“It was President Barack Obama who broke the seal of beer in the White House, joining the American tradition of cooking a drink at home, in converted cellars, and dividing the almost sacred culture that has penetrated into the American hearts,” the article reads.
It is noted that Obama’s project began in the White House kitchens with a home brewery set from a local workshop and with the support of his cooks – Sema Cassa and Tafar Campbell. A few trial drafts later (and some tips from home brewers in the building) – and the first White House Honey Brown Ale was born.
The name goes with the secret: the honey used in the White House beer was produced in a hive in the southern lawn. He gave beer a wonderful aroma and aftertaste, not making it too sweet. Interestingly, the hive itself was the first in the White House, and at least 70,000 insects produced honey used in beer and for other purposes in the kitchen.
It is noteworthy that the White House team was very surprised by how delicious beer was, since none of them had experience in cooking this drink. But Honey Brown Ale was successful that two more varieties of beer were cooked with it: Honey Blonde (what a white house also called a porter) and Honey Ale.
“It is unclear whether this drink is cooked so far by the former President of Obama or the current White House administration, but these three will certainly enter American history as something unique and truly special,” they added there.
