“We hope for continued support”: Sybiga spoke about Ukraine’s contacts with Trump’s team

Ukraine hopes for continued support for Ukraine from the United States when the administration of newly elected US President Donald Trump begins work. This was said by Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiga at the NATO headquarters, answering questions from RFE/RL.

“They (Russia – ed.) seek the capitulation of Ukraine and the dismantling of our statehood. Accordingly, we, together with our allies, must do everything to force Russia to a just, comprehensive, sustainable peace. And here we are talking about the concept of “peace through strength”. Today, the head of the Office, Andriy Yermak, is in the US, and he will have relevant important meetings, and this contact at the level of the head of the office is extremely important for establishing, in particular, relations with representatives of the new administration. I was also recently in Washington, I had important meetings with representatives of both chambers, both parties, with Republicans, where we talked about further support for Ukraine,” the minister said.

On November 19, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed confidence in the “correction of processes” between the team of the newly elected US President Donald Trump and Kyiv. He confirmed the upcoming visit to the USA by the head of the Office of the President, Andriy Yermak.

Donald Trump won the US presidential elections, the change of administration and transfer of power should take place on January 20.

In November, Reuters reported, citing sources including five current and former senior Russian officials, that Putin was ready to discuss with Trump after he took office the possibility of a ceasefire in Ukraine and, in particular, was ready to agree to a freeze on the war on the current front line, but has no intention of giving up most of the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia, and insists that Ukraine should not join NATO.

The Kremlin, commenting on this publication, said that Putin is open to negotiations, but does not agree to freezing the front line.

Kyiv has repeatedly stated that it cannot agree to any territorial concessions or freezing of the conflict. Such a freeze, according to the Ukrainian authorities, will only help Russia better prepare for a new attack.
