Shigeru Ishiba wants to radically revise Japan’s security cooperation with the United States and its neighbors in the region.

He was 67-year-old Shigeru Ishiba, the country’s former defense minister, known for his “hawkish” position. This is reported by The New York Times.

To be more precise, Isiba was elected as the head of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. According to Japanese political tradition, it is the leader of the ruling party who becomes the prime minister. It is expected that Isiba will be formally appointed as the head of the government next Tuesday.

The current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced his intention to resign back in August due to low approval ratings of his actions among the population, related in particular to inflation and a number of political financial scandals.

During internal party elections, Ishiba promised to focus on rural revitalization and to permanently shut down Japan’s nuclear power plants, many of which were shut down after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that triggered the nuclear disaster.

He offered several prescriptions for how to improve Japan’s economy or solve its demographic problems, with about a third of the population now over 65.

In foreign policy, Shigeru Ishiba advocates the creation of an Asian counterpart to NATO to strengthen regional security in the face of China’s increasingly aggressive actions. He also spoke of the need to review Japan’s military alliance with the United States to make it more “equal.”

However, political scientists say that it is unlikely that he will be able to significantly reshape relations with the United States, which developed after the Second World War in the conditions of the Cold War. In addition, a lot will depend on who will become the next president of the United States.

The situation in the Asia-Pacific regionAs UNIAN wrote, US allies in Asia were frightened by the terrible experience of Ukraine, which was left alone against Russia due to the fact that it is not a member of the defense alliance. Now Japan wants to create a local analogue of NATO in the region in order not to become a victim of Chinese aggression.

According to experts, China may be preparing a surprise attack on Japan. This operation will include a massive missile attack on the main American and Japanese military facilities in the archipelago. Such an attack would be necessary for China in the event of its attack on Taiwan – a simultaneous attack on Japan would aim to thwart a possible US response.
