The diplomat noted that he did not understand Merkel’s assertion that Poland and the Baltic States are allegedly guilty of a full -scale invasion of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin into Ukraine in 2022.
“First, we will be honest, neither in the Baltic countries, nor the Poles have critical influence to block any decisions in the middle of the European Union,” Klimkin said, but added that the EU decisions are made on the basis of a reasonable consensus.
However, secondly, many different contacts and conversations occurred before the full-scale invasion.
“And Macron tried to promote it very actively. And some European leaders tried to sit with Putin at the table of the long table … Therefore, to say that the contacts were not enough, and in general, the opportunities for conversation were also lacking, and most importantly, that it prevented Germany or someone else.

He recalled that in 2015, Merkel began to work on promoting the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline and represented this project as an “economic history”.
“And the fact that she reacted very allergic to many, in particular, including me, who spoke politically, and in the media, very actively criticizing, with criticizing this reality, now it is pressing on it,” Klimkin added.
In his opinion, now Merkel “will look back and say – what works and what doesn’t work.”
He believes that Merkel was the last significant politician in Europe who tried to preserve the logic of German-Russian, and before that the logic of German-Soviet relations of interdependence.
“She believed in this logic. Even Putin, who frankly lied to” green men “or other things, did not actually force her to move away from this logic,” Klimkin said.
