This opinion was expressed by the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, in an author’s article for The Economist.

He noted that the obvious goal of Vladimir Putin is the conquest of all of Ukraine, and not another temporary compromise, like the Minsk Agreements. Especially considering the efforts spent in the last three years.

“Analysts seem to be building their own models of peace [в Україні] on the assumption that Mr. Putin is a man who makes rational decisions. They miss the fact that he is fighting the war of his life and that his ambitions go beyond mere territory,” Kuleba emphasized.

According to the former minister, even if Donald Trump decides to stop military aid to Ukraine, forcing Kyiv to make concessions to Russia, this does not mean that Volodymyr Zelenskyi will immediately make these concessions. After all, Ukraine will still have certain stocks of weapons previously received from the United States, and there is also help from Europe.

“If Mr. Zelenskyy agreed (an unlikely scenario), parts of Ukrainian society would resist. Internal unrest threatens the internal disintegration of the country. This would give Mr. Putin the victory he has long desired by painting Ukraine as a failed state, but the responsibility for this will fall squarely on Mr. Trump. He cannot allow Ukraine to become his Afghanistan,” Kuleba emphasized.

Thus, the former minister is convinced that neither Zelensky nor Putin will agree to something similar to the Minsk agreements. In turn, Trump cannot afford to fail with his promise to end the war, but he also cannot “throw Ukraine under the bus”, because then he will look weak and eventually be forced to resume aid to Ukraine even in a larger amount than before.

“So those who crave de-escalation under the president-elect may be stunned to see the exact opposite in the coming months. Both Mr. Zelensky and Mr. Putin now see Mr. Trump as their chance to tip the scales in their favor. Mr. Trump, in turn, will be forced to follow them in the escalation of their own line,” Kuleba summarizes.

Prospects for peace in UkraineAs UNIAN wrote, the “Weimar Triangle+” is urgently meeting in Warsaw regarding the war in Ukraine. Against the background of Scholz’s talks with Putin, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland said that “things are accelerating.”

We also reported that, according to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Donald Trump has a “more sophisticated position” towards Ukraine than what is attributed to him. In particular, Scholz does not believe that the newly elected US president will sacrifice Ukraine.
