Defense Minister Rustem Umyerov held a telephone conversation with the newly appointed European Union Commissioner for Defense and Space Andryus Kubilyus – he announced this on the evening of December 2.

According to him, he congratulated Kubilyus on his appointment to this position, which “for the first time in the history of the European Commission” combines defense policy and the development of space technologies.

“This is a landmark step for Europe, which confirms its readiness to adapt to modern security challenges. And it is a great honor for me that our conversation was the first for Mr. Kubilyus in his new position,” Umyerov said.

The minister added that the parties discussed the creation of the White Paper on European defense, which should strengthen the readiness of the European Union for security challenges. This document will include a section on ways of military defense support for Ukraine now, in the medium and long term.

“The attention was focused separately on the situation at the front. I informed Mr. Kubilyus about the most urgent needs of the Ukrainian Defense Forces: training and equipping brigades, strengthening air defense, providing artillery, ammunition and investments in our defense industry,” the head of the Ministry of Defense added.

He added that he invited Kubilyus to visit Ukraine on a working visit.

Kubilyus in his post on X (formerly Twitter) reported on the conversation with Umerov. He called Ukraine’s ability to defend itself “a significant contribution to Europe’s readiness for the most extreme military circumstances.”

Former Prime Minister of Lithuania Andrius Kubilius, who assumed the post of the first-ever defense commissioner of the European Union, said in September that over the next few years it is necessary to invest more than 500 billion euros in the development of Europe’s defense industry.
