Ukrainian President Zelensky Visits Gulf Region Amid Defense Agreement Talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made an unexpected visit to the Gulf region, signaling imminent defense agreements with Saudi Arabia. This trip is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to enhance military cooperation in the Middle East.

During his visit, Zelensky aimed to share Ukraine’s expertise in drone warfare in exchange for support in defense matters. He announced plans for significant meetings while in Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the importance of collaboration on security issues.

“We value the support and offer assistance to those willing to cooperate with us on security matters,” he stated.

Sources familiar with the situation indicated that Zelensky did not elaborate on the specifics of his trip, which is expected to include visits to other countries in the region. However, an unnamed senior official confirmed to AFP that Ukraine is preparing to sign an air security agreement with Saudi Arabia.

Last week, Zelensky mentioned ongoing negotiations with Middle Eastern countries regarding defense agreements, alongside discussions with the United States about a potential drone deal. He noted, “We are primarily working with the Middle East, engaging with leaders at the technical level and defense ministries. We are preparing serious agreements and will see when they are ready.”

Additionally, reports from BBC indicated that Ukrainian interceptor drones have successfully intercepted several Iranian drones in the Gulf region.

President Zelensky's visit to the Gulf region underscores Ukraine's efforts to solidify defense partnerships, particularly with Saudi Arabia. As negotiations progress, Ukraine aims to leverage its drone capabilities in exchange for military support.
