Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Syrian and Turkish representatives in Damascus on April 5 to discuss defense cooperation and food security. This meeting marks the first visit by a Ukrainian leader to Syria since 2002.
Zelensky held two discussions during his visit: a bilateral meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and a subsequent trilateral meeting involving officials from Ukraine, Syria, and Turkey. He stated that a range of topics were addressed, including regional security issues related to Iran, as well as energy and infrastructure collaboration.
The Ukrainian president emphasized the importance of ongoing discussions regarding food security, stating, “We will continue our work in this area.” He also highlighted the dialogue between Ukraine and Russia, thanking the Syrian people for their warm welcome to the Ukrainian delegation.
Zelensky noted Ukraine’s early support for Syria following the fall of the Assad regime and expressed a commitment to further bolster stability and development in the region. He added, “We will work more closely together so that our nations and economies can become stronger.”
This visit underscores Ukraine’s intent to strengthen ties in the Middle East, particularly in the context of defense and economic cooperation.
