Ukrainian President Claims Pressure from US and Russia over Donbas Negotiations

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that both the United States and Russia are exerting pressure on Kyiv to cede control of the Donbas region as part of any peace agreement. Zelensky emphasized that both nations have suggested that relinquishing Donbas would expedite the end of the ongoing conflict.

Both Americans and Russians are saying: if you want the war to end tomorrow, give up Donbas,” Zelensky remarked during a recent address.

The remarks come in the wake of the third round of trilateral negotiations held in Geneva on February 17-18, involving delegations from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia. These discussions aimed to find a resolution to the ongoing war, but significant differences remain, particularly concerning territorial disputes.

Russia is demanding the entirety of the Donetsk region, where its military has faced considerable resistance. In contrast, Ukraine is advocating for an unconditional ceasefire, insisting that any negotiations be based on the current lines of demarcation.

During the peace talks, the idea of establishing a demilitarized zone in Donbas was also discussed. This zone would be characterized by the absence of military forces from both nations. Additionally, the parties explored the possibility of creating a free trade area within any potential demilitarized zone.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that both the US and Russia are pressuring Ukraine to cede the Donbas region to facilitate peace talks. Ongoing negotiations highlight significant territorial disputes that continue to hinder progress towards a ceasefire.
