Ukraine Urges European Nations to Enhance Ballistic Missile Defense Cooperation

During a recent video conference with defense ministers from the E5 group—comprising France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom—Ukrainian Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov called for an urgent expansion of production capabilities for ballistic missile defense systems.

Fedorov emphasized that while Ukraine is developing its own solutions, there is a pressing need for deeper cooperation with European countries. He stated,

“The European defense industry must urgently increase production capacities for ballistic missile defense systems, as current output levels remain critically low.”

One of the key topics discussed was the PURL program, which ensures a steady supply of PAC-3 missiles for Ukraine’s Patriot missile systems. Fedorov expressed gratitude to partners, particularly Boris Pistorius, for their promptness in delivering weapons following recent agreements. He remarked,

“The swift implementation of agreements within hours is an example of how we should operate.”

In addition to defense matters, Fedorov announced new measures aimed at limiting revenue for aggressors. This includes actions against Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” which Ukraine is preparing in collaboration with the European Union. He also stressed the importance of effectively utilizing European loans, stating,

“These funds must work towards achieving the main goal—successfully concluding the war for Ukraine.”

Furthermore, Ukraine is reforming the Ramstein format to make defense support from partners more predictable and sustainable. Recent discussions have led to Ukraine securing one of the largest aid packages from the Ramstein initiative, which includes critical resources for strengthening its front lines and air defense.

Reports indicate that Ukrainian drone defense units set a record in January for the number of targets intercepted, highlighting the effectiveness of new technological solutions in countering Russian aerial attacks.

Ukraine's Defense Minister has called for enhanced collaboration with European nations to bolster ballistic missile defense capabilities. The discussions included strategies for increasing production and addressing economic pressures on aggressors, while also securing significant military aid.
