Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks Stalled as Moscow Issues Ultimatum

Recent peace negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States have not yielded any signs of progress, as Moscow continues to express its unwillingness to end the ongoing conflict. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to take decisive action, warning that failing to do so could result in lost opportunities for peace.

In the past month, two rounds of talks were held in Abu Dhabi, with the first occurring on January 23-24. Despite these discussions, Russian forces launched a significant attack on Ukraine during the night of January 24, targeting energy infrastructure.

The second round of negotiations took place on February 4-5, yet again coinciding with a major assault by Russian troops. On February 3, a strike severely damaged the Darnytsia Thermal Power Plant in Kyiv, leaving over 1,000 residents without heating for the remainder of winter.

During the negotiations, Russian representatives reportedly presented Ukraine with a new ultimatum concerning the Donbas region, demanding that all parties involved formally recognize Donetsk and Luhansk as Russian territory.

Ukraine’s stance remains firm, with President Zelensky asserting that the country will not compromise on territorial integrity. He has explicitly rejected any notion of withdrawing Ukrainian forces from the Donetsk area.

A third round of negotiations is scheduled for next week in Geneva, but the outlook remains grim as both sides continue to hold steadfast to their positions.

The latest peace talks between Ukraine and Russia have stalled, with Moscow issuing a new ultimatum regarding territorial claims. As Ukraine maintains its firm stance, the upcoming negotiations in Geneva may prove crucial yet challenging.
