Andriy Sybiga commented on Infantino’s statement about Russia’s return to international football / collage UNIAN, photo UNIAN, REUTERSRussia continues to kill peaceful citizens of Ukraine and does not want to stop the war. Under such circumstances, there can be no question of the return of Russian teams to international football, emphasized the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiga.
“679 Ukrainian girls and boys will never be able to play football – Russia killed them. And it continues to kill even more while moral degenerates propose to lift the bans. Despite the fact that Russia has not stopped the war”, – reads the statement published in Telegram.
According to the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “future generations will consider it a shame like the 1936 Olympics.”
How the Ukrainian Football Association reactedIn its statement, the Ukrainian Football Association calls on FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino not to change the position of the football bodies regarding the suspension of Russians from football competitions, as long as the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine continues:
“Military actions on the territory of Ukraine continue, the situation has not improved, attacks are destroying civilian infrastructure and the lives of civilians. The Russians continue to advance on the front line.”
In addition, it is noted that millions of Ukrainians remain without light, water and heat due to constant shelling of populated areas throughout the country.
“We do not agree with the statement that a ban against an aggressor does not work. We consider exclusion from participation in competitions an effective method of putting pressure on the aggressor. The potential reintegration of any Russian national team endangers the safety and integrity of the competition,” the UAF emphasized.
The return of Russian athletes to the international arenaAs UNIAN reported, FIFA President Infantino advocated the return of Russian teams because, in his opinion, sanctions against Russian football players “brought even more disappointment and hatred.”
Earlier, athletes from Russia and Belarus received full admission to taekwondo competitions. They were allowed to perform under national flags and with the national anthem.
