More than 10% of the country’s pre -war economically active population is currently abroad.

According to her, about 1.7 million Ukrainians who worked before the war at home are abroad. This is about 10% of the country’s pre -war economically active population.
Now Ukraine is experiencing a deep demographic crisis, characterized by rapid aging of the population. The proportion of people aged 65 and older increased from 12% in 1991 to 18% in 2021, and in 2024 it reached 22%.
Marchak noted that as a result of demographic processes, the number of able -bodied population in Ukraine, compared with the pre -war 2021, decreased by 40%. And due to the challenges and threats caused by long war, demographers predict that by 2041 the population of Ukraine could be reduced to 28.9 million, and by 2051 – to 25.2 million.
“Demography changes and affects the labor market. 74% of employers have a lack of staff, and the average deficit in companies is approximately 15% of the state,” the Deputy Minister emphasized.
She noted that the trend to the aging of the population would continue. But at the same time, according to Marchak, only 27% of people over the age of 50 work. In addition, Ukraine needs an additional 4-5 million people to restore the economy.
The Deputy Minister noted that because of the demographic crisis, Ukraine should eradicate Aijism (age discrimination, biased attitude towards people on the basis of their age), which is present in various spheres of life, including the labor market. Marchak reported that 69% of men and 67% of women aged 50 years of age and older have Eijism, and employers often offer young vacancies.
Demographic crisis in UkraineThe First Deputy Minister of Social Policy Darya Marchak noted that millions of able -bodied Ukrainians left a full -scale invasion of abroad. According to the NBU, the number of able -bodied population has decreased by more than a quarter.
At the same time, according to the Institute of Demography, the birth ratio in Ukraine – 0.9 children per woman, and the norm for recovery – 2.2.
The demographic situation in Ukraine is difficult from the onset of independence, but coronavirus and war have increased the negative trend, said the leading researcher of the Demography Institute Svetlana Aksenova.
