In a recent interview, he stated, “Vladimir Putin has always been completely honest with me. I say this, and I am immediately attacked, but this is an accurate statement.” Witkoff emphasized the importance of understanding Putin’s motives and objectives in order to effectively negotiate.
Witkoff has met with Putin eight times, which has drawn scrutiny. He defended these meetings, saying, “How would you strike a deal with someone on the other side if you didn’t know where they stand? I needed to understand his motives and goals. I truly believe that many of those meetings are becoming very relevant now. I think they were important, and I hope we can bring everything to a conclusion.”
Recently, President Donald Trump praised Witkoff’s ability to communicate with both Russia and Ukraine, claiming that he is well-regarded by all parties involved. Trump highlighted Witkoff’s initial assignment to negotiate with Putin as evidence of his diplomatic skills.
Witkoff’s previous visits to Moscow have included significant discussions, with the latest meeting occurring on January 22. This session also featured Russian officials Yuri Ushakov and Kirill Dmitriev.
