U.S. Senators Visit Odesa Ahead of War Anniversary

A delegation of U.S. senators visited Odesa, marking the first such trip since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine nearly four years ago. The visit occurred just days before the anniversary of the invasion on February 24.

The group included Senators Jeanne Shaheen (New Hampshire), Sheldon Whitehouse (Rhode Island), Richard Blumenthal (Connecticut), and Chris Coons (Delaware). According to Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Stefanishyna, the senators received a comprehensive briefing on the regional security situation, focusing on air defense capabilities and the impact of Russian strikes on critical infrastructure and residential areas.

Stefanishyna noted that the senators were informed about the adverse effects of Russian aggression on American businesses, with over half of those operating in Ukraine having already suffered from the conflict. This topic was discussed during meetings with representatives from U.S. agricultural and logistics companies.

The itinerary included visits to the port and conversations with individuals tasked with defending Odesa and the Black Sea ports. The delegation also met with local religious and community leaders, as well as regional officials.

Stefanishyna emphasized that the senators witnessed the resilience of Odesa’s residents, who continue to live and work amid ongoing attacks and challenges such as power outages and heating shortages.

Members of the delegation reaffirmed the urgency of increasing pressure on Russia, advocating for bipartisan legislation in the U.S. Congress to support this goal, as reported by the diplomat.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen stated that her proposed bills, including the “Stop Russia and China” initiative and sanctions against the “shadow fleet,” are ready for consideration when the Senate reconvenes next week. Additionally, a sanctions bill co-authored by Senator Richard Blumenthal, known for his strong anti-Russian stance, is also expected to be voted on soon.

A recent visit by U.S. senators to Odesa highlighted ongoing security concerns and the impact of Russian aggression on local and American businesses. The delegation's discussions focused on legislative measures to enhance support for Ukraine as the anniversary of the invasion approaches.
