Former U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that Russia is eager to negotiate a peace agreement regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, urging Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to take action or risk missing a significant opportunity.
Trump made these remarks during a press briefing at the White House, emphasizing the urgency for Zelensky to respond to Russia’s willingness to engage in talks. The comments come as trilateral discussions involving Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia are set to take place in Geneva on February 17-18.
According to reports from the Office of the President of Ukraine, the upcoming negotiations will be led by Vladimir Medinsky, an assistant to the Russian president, who previously headed the Russian delegation in earlier talks. In past discussions, the Russian side had rejected proposals for a ceasefire and insisted on the recognition of territories occupied by Russia in Ukraine.
Earlier rounds of negotiations, facilitated by the U.S., took place in Abu Dhabi on January 23-24 and February 4-5. While these meetings were described as constructive, they did not yield significant progress toward ending the conflict. However, a notable development was the agreement on a prisoner exchange, the first in five months.
U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff characterized the discussions on February 4-5 as focused on creating conditions for lasting peace, with ceasefire terms being a key topic. Following the talks, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted a reduction in the number of unresolved issues between Ukraine and Russia but acknowledged that the most challenging questions remain, particularly concerning territorial disputes.
Donald Trump has urged Ukraine's President Zelensky to act on Russia's willingness to negotiate a peace deal. As trilateral talks are set to resume, previous discussions have seen limited progress, though a prisoner exchange agreement was reached recently.
