US President Donald Trump reversed the decision of his predecessor Joe Biden to remove Cuba from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism, the White House announced.

On January 14, the Biden administration said it would remove Cuba from a list that severely impedes foreign investment in exchange for a promise to release 553 people, including Cubans, imprisoned during the crackdown on mass protests in 2021. Cuba released prisoners, including opposition leader Daniel Ferrer.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said on the X Network that Trump’s goal is to “continue to accelerate the brutal economic war against Cuba for the purpose of domination.”

The White House did not describe the reason for rescinding Biden’s order or how the move would affect the released prisoners.

Earlier, the new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is of Cuban origin, said that he had no doubt that Cuba was on the list of state sponsors of terrorism.

He said the Colombian guerrilla group FARC “enjoyed the full support of the Cuban regime throughout its existence” and that Cuba was “openly friendly” to the militants of Hamas and Hezbollah, both designated by Washington as terrorist groups.

In 2015, the Obama administration removed Cuba from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism. Rapprochement between the two countries was put on hold after Trump took office in January 2017. He tightened restrictions on travel to Cuba and banned business with companies controlled by the Cuban military. Among other measures, he included Cuba on the US list of state sponsors of terrorism

Only three other countries are on the list of state sponsors of terrorism: Iran, North Korea and Syria.

Since his inauguration on Monday, Trump has reversed 78 measures introduced by the previous administration.
