US President Donald Trump announced that on January 20 he will declare a state of emergency in the energy system of the United States of America. He said this in his inaugural speech on Monday.

“We will drill, baby, drill. The United States will be a producing nation, and we will have what no other producing nation will ever have — the most oil and gas of any country on earth, and we will use it,” Trump said.

Trump added that “liquid gold under our feet” will make America “a rich country again.”

“With my actions today, we will end the Green New Deal and repeal the electric car mandate, saving our cars. Industry and honoring my sacred oath to our great American auto workers,” he stated.

Trump also said the U.S. would “refill our strategic reserves, to the top” and export energy around the world.

The emergency declaration is just one of many actions Trump is expected to take to prop up the U.S. oil, gas and energy industries and slow former President Joe Biden’s efforts to boost the electric car industry.

Biden came to the White House pledging to get rid of fossil fuels in the U.S., but U.S. oil and gas production has hit record highs due to sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.

A state of emergency declaration allows the president to use up to 150 special powers normally reserved for dealing with hurricanes, terrorist attacks and other unforeseen events, according to a report by the Brennan Center for Justice.

However, it is currently unclear whether Trump will be able to successfully use them to achieve his goal of building new power plants. During his first term, he tried to use special powers to help keep unprofitable coal and nuclear plants across the country from closing, citing emergency powers. These efforts were eventually abandoned.
