According to the publication, the peace plan prepared by Ukraine and the USA is the most detailed attempt to end the war.
Trump and Zelensky discuss what the United States can give Ukraine in exchange for possible concessions / photo: president.gov.uaA few hours before the start of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, on Sunday, December 28, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed the opinion that the leaders of both countries could save their efforts, reports The New York Times.
The publication noted that, according to Lavrov, Moscow would never agree to any agreement that would allow European troops to be stationed in Ukraine. At the same time, the deployment of European troops on the territory of Ukraine is a key element of the security plan that the President of Ukraine is developing during negotiations with the Trump administration.
The article states that the presence of European troops would be aimed at preventing future invasions and controlling the situation in the so-called “demilitarized zone” of Donbas, which Russia is demanding Ukraine hand over to it without a fight.
The publication notes that Lavrov’s harsh comments reminded of three realities. First, Russia has not yet conceded anything, or at least it has not been officially asked to do so.
It is added that until now the negotiations between Ukraine and the USA regarding the peace plan have focused on what compromises Zelensky is ready to make, as well as what the USA is ready to give in return. Russian President Vladimir Putin only stated that he will never give in to his desire to seize even more Ukrainian territory.
Secondly, as the publication points out, despite the complexity of territorial issues, Trump and Zelensky are still discussing the future of parts of eastern Ukraine and the fate of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. It is emphasized that the long-term plan to deter Russia from another invasion is the most difficult task.
Thirdly, the insistence of the head of the White House on achieving “strategic stability” with Russia. The article notes that these words are included in the US national security strategy. According to the publication, Trump understands this term not only as nuclear stability, but also as the normalization of diplomatic and economic relations.
Achieving such a reset will require the lifting of all economic sanctions against Moscow, the resumption of trade, the freeing of the flow of Russian oil and gas, and the re-acceptance of Russia by the West.
Trump, who has always been attracted to the prospect of deals with an economic component, has warmed to the idea, even though European leaders and much of his own party see it as dangerous as long as Vladimir Putin is in power in Russia.
At the same time, the publication points out, Trump and Zelensky are ending this year in a situation that few could have predicted just a few months ago: proposals for peace are on the table. Moreover, the US president has already declared that “there is no deadline for the end of the war.” It is said to be the most detailed attempt to achieve peace so far.
The article notes that there is a delicate political issue that Trump himself will ultimately have to resolve in the US in the event of a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. In particular, we are talking about the obligation of the United States to provide military assistance to Ukraine in the event of another Russian invasion.
Currently, the details of the security guarantees contained in the proposal for a peace agreement, developed jointly by the delegations of Ukraine and the United States, remain unknown. However, Zelensky’s announcement that they will be similar to NATO’s Article 5 would represent a huge shift in US policy.
It is noted that former US President Barack Obama was not ready to go that far when Russia seized Crimea in 2014. Also later, Joe Biden did not dare to send troops to Ukraine in February 2022, when there was a full-scale Russian invasion of this country, although he provided weapons, ammunition and intelligence to Ukraine.
Peace talks to end the war: the latest newsEarlier, UNIAN reported that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Ukraine allegedly tried to attack the state residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Novgorod region on the night of December 29. Lavrov said that in connection with this incident, the negotiating position of the Russian Federation “will be reviewed.” At the same time, according to the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, because of this, Moscow is allegedly not going to withdraw from the peace process. However, Lavrov warned that Ukraine is awaiting a response to this attack and allegedly “the time and objects for a retaliatory strike have already been determined.”
We also wrote that US President Donald Trump said that the Russian dictator personally told him about the attack during a phone conversation. He added that he doesn’t know anything about it, but believes that “it was bad and not good for anything.” At the same time, the head of the White House added that, in general, the conversation with Putin went well. They discussed “several very difficult issues” and if they can be resolved, then peace will be achieved.
