In his opinion, this change will give the department a “stronger sound” and emphasize its role, writes The Wall Street Journal.
The idea of renaming Trump has repeatedly voiced since the beginning of the second presidential term. On Monday, during a meeting with South Korea President Lee Jeaus, he stated that the decision could be made “over the week.”
“The old name has a stronger sound,” Trump said.
Former officials reported that the Pentagon even developed legislative proposals to return the name that could be made in Congress in the event of an emergency. One of the options is the revival of the Minister of War.
Historically, the Ministry of the War was established in 1789 and controlled the army, while a separate Ministry of the Navy was governed by a fleet and maritime infantry. After the Second World War, President Harry Truman united the armed forces into a single structure – a national military institution, which in 1949 was named after the Ministry of Defense.
Trump criticizes the modern name, considering it “too political”. He also emphasizes that the former title of Minister of War was more warlike and corresponded to the essence of the department. He made similar statements during the NATO summit in the Hague in June.
The return of the historical name may be the subject of discussions in Congress, as changing the status of the department will have serious political and military consequences.
Pentagon renamingAs reported by UNIAN, Trump has previously announced that he was considering the renaming of the Ministry of Defense to the Ministry of War “next week or so.”
“We call it the Ministry of Defense, but between us, I think we are going to change the name. If you want to know the truth, I think it will be information about it. I spoke with people – and everyone likes it,” the American leader said.
