Marchenko did not name specific terms to complete the subsoil / photo agreementUkraine and the US still have to resolve the issue of signing an important mineral agreement. This was reported by Reuters Minister of Finance of Ukraine Serhiy Marchenko.
It is noted that the day before, he and other officials of Ukraine met with US Finance Minister Scott Bessent to discuss the Agreement and current issues regarding Russian assets, frozen and detained from the moment of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Marchenko said that he did not expect signing this week, although he and high-ranking Ukrainian officials, including Prime Minister Denis Shmigal, are in Washington at the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
“Progress has been made, and now our teams are working very closely. There are some more issues we discuss. We work as fast as we can to sign an agreement,” the minister said.
However, he did not name specific terms to complete the agreement. According to him, negotiations continue, despite Russia’s attacks on Kyiv at night.
Marchenko also stated that Bessent wants the issue of frozen Russian assets, which, according to Kiev, should be transferred to Ukraine for compensation for damage and losses from the war, became part of wider discussions.
Minerals AgreementA week ago, both countries signed a memorandum as the first step to the conclusion of an agreement on expansion of economic cooperation, in particular by developing minerals in Ukraine, which was difficult.
US President Donald Trump has proceeded an agreement since the beginning of his second term in January. Both parties were ready to sign the natural resources agreement in February, but it was postponed – and since then it was revised – after the meeting of Trump and President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky in the oval office turned into a burner.
Last week, Trump stated that he was expecting a signing of the agreement on Thursday.
