“There are definitely better solutions than stealing money from the Russian central bank. It’s a radical step. I think it’s very foolish and thoughtless,” he said.

The Prime Minister of Belgium said that he is afraid of lawsuits if the European Union decides to confiscate Russian assets on Euroclear’s balance sheet. It is there that 193 billion euros of Russian assets, frozen after the start of the full-scale war against Ukraine, are stored.

Bart De Wever added that the Belgian authorities are negotiating with the European Commission to find out whether Ursula von der Leyen’s proposal can be brought “in line with the minimum conditions set by Belgium”. He emphasized that these conditions are “rational, reasonable and justified”.

Russian assets are not a panacea for UkraineEarlier, The Times wrote that the frozen Russian assets could prove to be the most important trump card in negotiations to end the war for Ukraine and its allies. However, the publication believes that without constant American logistical and intelligence support, Kyiv’s ability to continue the war is questionable.

The journalists added that the transfer of at least part of the assets to Ukraine in the near future is critically important, since the US stopped financing Ukraine with the arrival of President Donald Trump, while European governments do not want to increase their own debts in order to support Kyiv.
