Slovakia is interested in an immediate end to the war, says a government official.
According to him, it is in the interests of Slovakia for the Russian-Ukrainian war to end immediately: for a truce to prevail on the front line and for peace negotiations to begin between the countries. At the same time, Kaliniak believes that the post-war form of Ukraine is more important than the borders that will be established as a result of the war.
“Probably, Ukraine is not aware of the fact that it will never be able to find itself between Germany and Switzerland, but instead will always have its largest border with the Russian Federation. There is nothing to argue about who is the aggressor here, because Russia has crossed all borders, rules and violated international right. But it is necessary to pay attention to what is happening in other parts of the world and apply the same standards to all other disputes,” Kaliniak said.
Prospects for peace in Ukraine The Slovak minister is far from the first to believe that Ukraine’s loss of its territories, which were seized by Russia, is inevitable. At least for a while. For example, a similar opinion was voiced by the President of the Czech Republic, Peter Pavel. He urged to look at the situation realistically, because “the most likely result of the war will be that part of the Ukrainian territory will temporarily be under Russian occupation.”
Actually, the “peace plan” proposed by Keith Kellogg, the retired American general, whom Donald Trump decided to appoint as the head of the Ukrainian direction, also envisages such a scenario. According to his plan, the war will be frozen along the front line, there are no territorial exchanges in the plan.
Moreover, at the end of November, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, also publicly admitted the option that after the peace agreement, the occupied territories would remain under Russian control. It is planned to return them by diplomatic methods.
