No one knows exactly how old this turtle, because Jonathan arrived in the South Atlantic Island of St. Helen in 1882 as a gift to the future governor of British overseas territories William Gray-Willow. IFLSCIENCE writes about it.
“Given Jonathan’s maturity at the time, we can assume that he was at least 50 years old – and because in 2022 he was finally appointed his official birthday, he fell on December 4, 1832,” the material reads.
Therefore, this year the animal will be at least 193 years old. During this time, the turtle survived US presidents from Andrew Jackson to Donald Trump.
According to Veterinarian Joe Hallins in 2023 during the Guinness Book Ceremony, Jonathan probably no longer smells, and he lost his vision because of cataract, but his appetite remains acute.
“He loves banana, but he has an eraser in his mouth. The heart of salad, though not very nutritious, but beloved. He also loves cabbage, cucumber, apple, other seasonal fruits, carrots – a good source of dietary fibers he loves,” Hallinsa said.
The vet also told about the turtle schedule:
“He enjoys the sun, but in very hot days hides in the shade. On cool days, he sunbaths – his long neck and legs are completely pulled out of the shell to absorb heat and transfer it to the core. In cold winter days, it is buried in a deciduous mold or molding grass.”
In addition, it is known that Jonathan lives with two other turtles, namely Emma and Fred.
“Despite his age, Jonathan still has a good libido, and we often see how he mate with Emma and sometimes with Fred,” the veterinarian added.
