Carney said that the center of gravity in the world economy is shifting.
Carney said he will not allow Trump to dictate his agenda / REUTERSCanadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that the world can make progress on a number of issues without the United States. He also said the consensus reached at the G20 leaders’ meeting in Johannesburg this weekend has weight, despite a boycott by President Donald Trump’s administration, Bloomberg writes.
The summit “brought together countries representing three-quarters of the world’s population, two-thirds of the world’s GDP and three-quarters of the world’s trade, and this without the official participation of the United States. It is a reminder that the center of gravity in the world economy is shifting,” Carney said.
Carney emphasized that he will not allow Trump to dictate his agenda.
“I’ll talk to him again when it’s necessary,” he said. “I don’t have any pressing issues to discuss with the president right now. When America wants to come back and talk about trade, we will.”
He also spoke in detail about his attempts to strengthen ties with various countries, from South Africa to India and China.
“We are signing new agreements and finding new investors to implement our plans for Canada’s economic ambitions,” he said. “We will expand trade and stimulate investment to expand partnerships in various fields – from artificial intelligence to energy in the Indo-Pacific region and Europe.”
Bloomberg recalls that South Africa, which is hosting the G20 summit this year, challenged the US by publishing a declaration following the meeting. Trump decided to boycott the summit, allegedly because of the oppression of white farmers in South Africa. At the same time, Washington emphasized that in the absence of the US at the summit, only the chairman’s report can be published.
The conflict between the USA and CanadaAfter Trump’s return to the White House, the relationship between the US and Canada, which was traditionally considered one of the closest and most stable in the world, entered a period of acute crisis and unpredictability.
Even at the stage of the presidential campaign, Trump began to threaten Canada with high tariffs on imports and call it the “51st state.”
In October, a high-profile scandal broke out between Canada and the United States over a television advertisement sponsored by the government of the Canadian province of Ontario. Trump was so angry that he ended trade talks with Canada and imposed a new 10 percent tariff increase on Canadian exports to the United States.
Against this background, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is trying to strengthen economic ties with China and India.
