The US Secretary of Commerce provoked a scandal in Davos / photo commerce.govUS Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick came under fire at a World Economic Forum (WEF) dinner in Davos hosted by BlackRock CEO Larry Fink. This was reported by several participants of the event in a Financial Times comment.
According to them, on Tuesday evening, the atmosphere at the dinner sharply escalated after Lutnik’s belligerent and provocative remarks. The reaction was mocking from the audience, and some of the guests defiantly left the hall. The situation escalated to such an extent that Larry Fink, chairman of the world’s largest asset management company and interim co-chairman of the WEF, had to appeal to the audience for calm.
Earlier in the day, Lutnick published a column in the Financial Times in which he openly declared the Donald Trump administration’s confrontational course on the global economic order. In particular, he wrote:
“We’re not going to Davos to support the status quo. We’re going to confront it head-on.”
Another thesis of the minister sounded even harsher:
“We are here in Davos to make one thing clear: with President Trump, capitalism has a new sheriff.”
What preceded The scandal is taking place against the backdrop of deteriorating relations between the United States and the European Union. Tensions rose after the US president threatened to introduce new tariffs against certain European countries if Washington was not allowed to “buy” Greenland.
