The US State Department answered whether they will facilitate negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine before the end of Biden’s term of office

The United States is ready to support negotiations between Ukraine and Russia if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expresses his readiness to do so, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.

He was asked if the Biden administration would facilitate negotiations to end the war in Ukraine during the last two months of his administration, if both sides express a willingness to begin negotiations in this direction. This question was in the context of Trump’s victory in the presidential election and his statement that he would be able to “within 24 hours” of his re-election to stop the war in Ukraine.

“If President Zelensky decides that he wants to start negotiations, of course, this is what we will support. This was our policy – that it is President Zelenskyy who should decide when the time comes for negotiations. This is not something we or any other country should be pushing him to do. And we will support him in any process to bring about a just and lasting peace,” Miller said, adding that ultimately it was “his decision, not ours.”

At the same time, a representative of the US State Department noted that Washington has not seen any signs that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to abandon his demand to continue absorbing Ukrainian territory.

“I am sure that there are negotiations that Putin will agree to, where he will get everything he wants, and Ukraine will not get anything that it is legally entitled to, but these are not the negotiations that President Zelensky is interested in, and and there should be no such negotiations. According to the UN Charter, Ukraine must preserve its territorial integrity,” he added.

Donald Trump won the US presidential elections, the change of administration and transfer of power should take place on January 20.

After the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Trump made contradictory statements, on the one hand, claiming that if he were president, Russia would not have dared to attack Ukraine, on the other hand, criticizing the administration of Joe Biden and the Democrats for allocating funds to Ukraine.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that after being elected president, he will be able to stop the war in Ukraine “within 24 hours.” Both in Moscow and Kyiv, these words were commented on with skepticism. The Washington Post newspaper previously wrote about the details of Trump’s alleged peace plan: it is claimed that he wants to put pressure on both Moscow and Kyiv in order to force them to make peace at the price of Ukraine giving up part of its territories, and Russia giving up other of its demands. Trump has not officially confirmed that this is the plan.
